Place of worship
Church of St Sofia
The early Christian basilica that gave the city its name.
The red-brick church you see today dates from the 6th century, built over older churches and a Roman cemetery. The city took the name Sofia from it in the 14th century. The remains under the church can be visited as an underground museum.
